I am writing as a constituent who is very concerned about the level of public investment in Australian higher education.
As an economically advanced country with a small population, our future lies in developing the education and skills of our people.&nbsp; The benefits of the current mining boom will not last forever and we must invest in Australia&rsquo;s long term future by improving the skills and productivity of our population.
University education promotes innovation and drives productivity growth that improves our economic output as well as the lives of the people involved.&nbsp; Australia&rsquo;s universities are essential to the economic, social, and cultural framework underpinning our society.&nbsp;
As centres of research and teaching, universities advance knowledge, foster critical thinking and public discourse, train our high level professions and provide life-long learning for students of all ages.&nbsp;
The uncapping of enrolments is resulting in significant additional enrolments, but these are not being funded at a sustainable level.
Both the Bradley Review in 2009 and the review of university base funding in 2011 has acknowledged that additional funding is required. I am particularly concerned about the recent comments by Minister Senator Chris Evans in response, that the sector is unlikely to receive any additional funding, and that the Government will not respond to the review until after the 2012 Budget.
&nbsp;I therefore ask you to support:

<li>An immediate increase in public funding per student by 10%, as recommended by the Bradley Review of Higher Education (2009);</li>
<li>A phased increase in the level of base public funding for universities from the current 0.7% to 1% to bring the level of public investment into line with the average of OECD countries;</li>
<li>Raising public awareness about the important and crucial role played by our higher education system in Australia&rsquo;s economy and culture, and the necessity to fund it properly.</li>
